about
I specialize in design solutions for nonprofit organizations—past clients have included PBS Television’s POV: American Documentary, the Environmental Protection Agency, Kartemquin Films, Northwestern University, Media Consortium, the National Association for Multicultural Education, Midwest Brain Injury Clubhouse, Synapse House, Project Philanthropy and EPIC: Engaging Philanthropy Inspiring Creatives, Columbia College Chicago, the Harvard Arab Alumni Association and United Taxidrivers Community Council. Other clients include: Katherine Anne Confections, The Second City, Robert Jeffrey Hair Studio and London Food Lovers Food + Wine Tours.
For nearly 17 years, my passion to make an impact in the world with visual storytelling and design has led me to direct the art department at the independent non-profit Chicago-based In These Times/Institute for Public affairs. This includes having overseen multiple transitions and redesigns of the print publication from the once small national bi-weekly to a larger monthly magazine to multiple iterations of InTheseTimes.com, developing branding assets, marketing/development materials, advertising and graphics across all channels/platforms—all while deadlines were met from ideation to execution.
I hire and manage all freelance photographers, illustrators and designers while overseeing/maintaining the department’s budget. It’s one thing to publish mission-based content about social justice/racial inequality issues but to me, it’s also an important thing to practice within the organization, thus making it my goal as creative director to amplify voices that are often left behind through the visual lens. I have successfully garnered a large portfolio of amazing artists, photographers and designers that have excelled at contributing to the national conversation around change.
In addition to my work at In These Times, I’ve had agency experience working with larger corporate brands like McDonalds, Coca-Cola, P&G and Research in Motion but have always preferred promoting and advocating for non-profit and educational institutions. Helping shape stories from the ground up and collaborating to visually amplify voices of organizations/institutions that are helping humanity has been an incredibly rewarding experience and one that I prefer to be doing.
